Title: What to Say
Set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. – 1 Timothy 4:12b
Words have a lot of power. The way we speak shapes how others understand us. It’s important to know what to say, but just as important to know how to say it, no matter who we’re talking to.
We should always speak with courtesy. Kind, gentle, and helpful words build others up. Our speech should also be interesting, or “seasoned with salt.” Just as salt makes food taste better and makes us want more, our words should make people want to keep listening. Finally, we need to be compassionate and “know how to answer each one.” This means paying attention to what others need to hear. If we follow the Holy Spirit’s guidance, we can meet those needs.
