Title: Don’t hand it over
I will not deny my integrity. – Job 27:5b
I periodically utilize a method designed to reinforce someone’s resolve to resist old beliefs about themselves and begin thinking anew. It involves identifying a truth they wish to uphold and then handing them a couch pillow.
“We’re going to play a little game. This pillow represents your new belief, and I’m going to try to take it from you.” I then attempt to persuade them to surrender it by using their own negative self-talk, such as, “You know you don’t really deserve it, so just hand it back.”
Surprisingly, some hand it back without hesitation, not realizing the point of the game.
Is that you?
