Title: Idols can be anything
“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. – Jonah 2:8
When God seeks us out, we may feel loved and valued. But if we resist surrendering, his pursuit can feel uncomfortable or even difficult.
This prayer is from a man who tried to run from God. He knew what God wanted but chose to go the other way. God kept reaching out, and Jonah ended up inside a fish. It was a miserable experience. As Jonah prayed, he saw that surrender was his only choice.
When we hear the word ‘idol,’ we often think of our possessions or maybe another person. For Jonah, his idol was his belief about who deserved God’s grace. An idol is anything we put above God. It can be anything at all.
Take a moment to reflect on your life. Is there something you value more than God? If you ask him, he may show you what it is.
