Title: In place of God
Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them. – Jonah 2:8
An idol is an image, object, or person.
Idols can be everyday things that we have and use that can take the place of God. A person is an interesting thought, though. When you look up the word idol in a thesaurus, they list – hero, icon, and superstar as a different way of looking at the word.
These things seem harmless, but this form of worship can sneak upon us. There is even a talent show called “American Idol” that gives you the dreams and hopes of becoming an idol to someone. A few other examples: sports shirts with players’ names, concert tee shirts, reading every ounce of print about superstars, etc. There’s nothing wrong with the superstars themselves; it’s just where we choose to place them in our lives.
We need to remember we have a Jealous God that wants our affections. The above-mentioned can very easily replace the time and resources we have to spend with God. Surrender yourself and your idols to God and let Him receive all the glory!
