Title: Typical Things
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart! – Hebrews 4:12
A danger lies along our path: going through the motions. It is a head-scratcher that we become desensitized to the sacred. Yet that’s what happened to Israel. Isaiah accused them of empty rituals, of missing mindful meaning, and of lacking holiness.
We, too, can become so familiar with the “typical” things we do as men (like carrying a Bible, going to church regularly, or saying grace at meals) that their significance and meaning fade in our hearts. How easy it is to sing a song or share in a prayer while our minds wander to things other than being in the presence of God. To address this, we need to make it our priority to cultivate a daily awareness of God’s presence and remember that our relationship with Him is personal. Set aside intentional time each day to study the Scriptures and worship God, letting His Word fill your heart and mind with truth.
