Title: Grit under Tough Circumstances
Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us… – Hebrews 12:1c
Years ago, my youngest daughter had the opportunity to intern with an organization that runs orphanages in Haiti. She had to raise $2400 to go on this trip. She saved enough on her own to buy her airline ticket, but not enough to cover the rest. She found other ways to raise the rest, including a letter-writing campaign, designing and selling a T-shirt, and asking for items for a garage sale. Six weeks before she was supposed to go, she severely sprained her ankle while working at camp. Her spirits sank as she faced the possibility of not being able to make the trip. I want you to understand that my daughter has a giant heart for these orphans and couldn’t stand the possibility of not going. So true to her Texas roots, she pulled herself up by the bootstraps. She kept working to raise her money, trusting God for whatever needed to happen so she could make the trip. She was released from the doctor’s care the week of the garage sale but still had to wear her boot. That morning, we prayed for a sign that God would honor her grit. She was $680 short of her goal, so that’s what we prayed for. I am here to testify that we raised $690 (no kidding), and she made the trip.
I marveled at the determination she showed during the trial set before her. I wondered if I would show the same grit under those circumstances. In a later conversation, she said I believed God would honor my hard work. I hold on to the promise that He would help her persevere during the enemy’s attack, saying, “All I had to do, Daddy, was hold onto God’s hand.” Ok, guys, go grab God’s hand and see where he takes you.
